Committees and Responsibilities
The Board of Directors of BronxWorks is responsible for setting policy and determining overall direction. The board meets as a full body at least five times a year and has several standing committees that meet at least four times annually. BronxWorks’ board is diverse in terms of gender, ethnicity, age, and professional expertise. Members are encouraged to be active in committees and at full board meetings.
The Executive Committee is the standing committee that helps set organizational direction, while the Program Committee carefully reviews designs for new programs and provides periodic feedback on established ones.
Program designs and concepts are reviewed by the Program Committee to determine their consistency with BronxWorks’ mission, examine possible linkages with existing program and other organizations, and assess long-term funding prospects. It provides feedback to the full board at regularly scheduled meetings or as required. Feedback to staff is supplied through the Executive Director, who meets with BronxWorks’ department directors on a monthly basis.
The board’s Finance Committee meets periodically to review BronxWorks’ finances with the executive director and the fiscal affairs director. Throughout a given fiscal year, the committee reviews actual revenues and expenditures against projections. Prior to the start of a new fiscal year, the Finance Committee presents a budget to the board for review and approval.
The Governance and Nominating Committee is responsible for assessing and nominating potential candidates to serve on the Board. Committee members work closely with the executive director, senior staff, and other parties to identify prospective board members in addition to making recommendations as to the size, composition, structure, and effectiveness of the Board.
The Development and Special Events Committee works with the executive director and the development director to develop determine fundraising targets for BronxWorks. The committee also organizes major agency fundraising events and helps with the development of case statements and revenue goals for capital and major program initiatives.
The Facilities Committee analyzes capital needs for real property owned by BronxWorks. Composed of selected Senior Staff and Board members, the committee assesses current and future technologica, equipment, and structural needs of BronxWorks and develops long-trem plans to meet those needs.
