The Bronx has the city’s highest rate of obesity, with residents facing an estimated 85% higher risk of being obese than people in Manhattan.

This is, in spite of the fact that the Bronx is also considered a food insecure neighborhood which means it has fewer options for healthy food choices. Children and adults go hungry because the rate of poverty in the borough remains stubbornly high.

How can people be obese and be hungry?  It is possible because:

  • Full service, reasonably priced supermarkets are rare in impoverished neighborhoods, and the ones that are there tend to carry more processed foods than seasonal fruits and vegetables.
  • Eating healthier costs at least an extra $1.50 per person per day.  That’s tough when you don’t have a job or you struggle to cover the rent.

BronxWorks is making a difference through its agency-wide initiatives to integrate access to healthy food, nutrition education and physical activity in as many programs as possible.

Join us in the fight to save lives and improve the health of our neighbors!  To not only sustain but also expand fitness activities, we need to repair and restore our 60-year old gymnasium and indoor pool at 1130 Grand Concourse so we can provide safe and up-to-date physical fitness facilities for the children, youth, and adults in our community.

The really exciting news?  Take advantage of this exciting chance to have your generosity matched dollar for dollar by December 31st!

We’ve raised $20,000 toward a $50,000 matching challenge grant for the Save Our Gym & Pool project so please help us reach this goal! To make your gift to the Save Our Gym and Pool project, please go here and select it in the campaign menu.

Thank you for helping us save lives through health and fitness! Together we can change the numbers.
