The American Council of Learned Societies is inviting recent PhDs in the humanities and social sciences to apply for two-year staff positions at BronxWorks and 19 other organizations.  Fellows will perform substantive work and receive professional mentoring.  The fellowship provides a stipend of $65,000 and provides individual health insurance.

Substantial changes are coming to the high school equivalency exam starting January 1, 2014.  Not only will the GED® test be taken on computers, the contents of the exam are also changing.  The new format will be more rigorous and include a career and college readiness portion.  This is expected to make passing more challenging.

As we’ve done in previous years, BronxWorks is now offering no-charge tax preparation services, including free e-filing, at two locations through April 15.

Our Morris Innovative Senior Center (80 E. 181th St.) will be open to tax filers Monday through Thursday 10am-7pm, Friday 10am-5pm, and Saturday 9am-5pm.  BronxWorks’ Burnside Avenue walk-in office at 2070 Grand Concourse schedules Saturdays 9am-5pm for tax services.

BronxWorks welcomed a delegation of more than 30 officials from Denmark’s National Labor Advisory Board on Wednesday, January 23rd.  They were referred to BronxWorks by the Robin Hood Foundation because they wanted to learn about how we engage unemployed adults and disconnected youth.

BronxWorks celebrated its 40th birthday on December 10th, at our Morris Innovative Senior Center.  The Morris ISC is located just a couple of blocks from where BronxWorks (originally known as Citizens Advice Bureau) opened its first office exactly 40 years earlier.

The NYC Human Resources Administration (HRA), in cooperation with the Mayor’s Office and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has set up multiservice Restoration Centers in the areas most affected by Hurricane Sandy. BronxWorks has been chosen to help run the Restoration Center in the Throgs Neck section of the Bronx.

Residents in need of home repairs get help from NYC Rapid Repairs, a new program designed to streamline the process of finding contractors to repair damaged homes.

On October 11th, BronxWorks and the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) marked the 20th anniversary of its Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) program.

HIPPY is a home-based early childhood development and parent education program that serves mostly immigrant parents.  It gives parents the tools to be their children’s first teachers and helps prepare 3-5 year olds for success in kindergarten and beyond.

As part of the BronxWorks 40th Year of Celebration repertory of activities, the organization collaborated with the southeast Bronx community group 52 People for Progress to stage a concert by the Gil Parris/Bernie Williams Quartet featuring baseball and music legend Bernie Williams.  Joining the quartet was special guest Erik Piza, a well-known percussionist who played congas.

On June 28th, BronxWorks held a grand opening and ribbon cutting for a new farmers market location in the Morris Heights neighborhood.  The Heights Community Farmers Market will be open every Thursday until November 15, from 9 am to 3 pm.  The market is located at University Avenue and West 181st Street, on the corner of the Aqueduct Walk.

On June 20, 2012 (the first day of summer), Mayor Bloomberg held a press conference at the BronxWorks Morris Innovative Senior Center to speak about the first heat warning of the season. Morris is one of the city’s many cooling centers available to the public during times of dangerous heat.

On May 17th, the BronxWorks Teen Action program held a Global AIDS Awareness Fashion Show at the Bronx Museum of the Arts (just down the block from our Community Center).  The purpose of the event was to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS in the Bronx and the world at large.  The fashion show featured three dresses (pictured above) made out of condoms specially designed by the teens.  The dresses were modeled by BronxWorks staff.

On May 8, the BronxWorks Community Center’s after-school program joined hundreds of parents and children at a march and rally at the Bronx County Courthouse.  The crowd protested Mayor Bloomberg’s proposed large budget cuts to after-school programs.

On Saturday, April 28, twenty children from the BronxWorks Aquatics Program attended the 17th Annual Big Swim Meet at Asphalt Green.  The swimmers (aged 6-12) competed in 25-yard freestyle races and received medals, t-shirts, and ice cream.  The day included a diving demonstration by members of the USA Olympic Team and a synchronized swimming performance from Canicius College.  Thanks to BronxWorks Water Safety Instructor Eileen Towey for coaching our young swimmers, and also to Lifeguards Julieann Ortiz and Christian Almont.  Congratulations to all of the swimmers!&n

BronxWorks will be hosting information and recruitment events for ReServe, an organization that matches professionals ages 55 and older with nonprofits and public agencies that need their expertise.  ReServists can do great things for their communities while they put their professional expertise to work on part-time service projects, in exchange for a modest hourly stipend.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach for the over 60-set.  As one of the city’s eight new Innovative Senior Centers (ISCs), the BronxWorks Morris Senior Center is now an example of what services for older adults should look like in the 21st century.

Some 126 seniors were on hand on Saturday, January 21st, for the center’s kickoff ceremony.  It is now known as the BronxWorks Morris Innovative Senior Center.

Pictures for sale as greeting cards

Award winning photojournalist Linda Solomon recently brought her Pictures of Hope project to one of BronxWorks' shelters for homeless families.  Through a grant from Chevrolet, Ms. Solomon presented cameras to the children and gave them lessons on how to take the best pictures.  She then took them around their South Bronx neighborhood to snap pictures representing their hopes for the future.

On October 18th, The New York Times reported on the 80% reduction in street homelessness in the Bronx since 2005.  BronxWorks, which is contracted by the city to perform street homeless outreach in the Bronx, can take much of the credit for this change.

The front page story discusses the success of the Housing First approach.  BronxWorks Homeless Outreach Team director Douglas Becht and US Marine Corps veteran Marvin Shepard, who was helped by BronxWorks, are interviewed.
