Richie Bastar, a two-time Grammy winning percussionist with El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, made a special appearance at the BronxWorks Main Community Center on January 13.  Commonly known as El Gran Combo, this band is considered Puerto Rico's most successful musical group and one of the most popular salsa orchestras around the world.  Mr. Bastar, who grew up in the Bronx, received an enthusiastic welcome from a crowd of 80 people, including seniors and teens.  He entertained his audience with reminiscences about growing up in the Bronx and an amazing musical performance with friends he brought along for the occasion that had the audience moving.  After the show, he signed and handed out CDs of his hits.  He gives his father, the late Francisco Bastar, who was also a percussionist and composer, credit for his success.  “We are very fortunate to have a musician of Richie’s caliber meet with our young people,” says Rey Morales, who oversees teen programs at BronxWorks.  “He is a testimony to what hard work and determination can yield.”
