Helping to make the South Bronx a bit greener, BronxWorks held a giveaway of 100 shade trees May 9th at the Carolyn McLaughlin Community Center. The free tree distribution is part of a project sponsored by the New York Restoration Project (NYRP) and Million TreesNYC.  Their goal is to distribute that many trees at the rate of 30,000 a year by 2017.  Claire Turner of NYRP called the turnout a success.

“The event went well,” says Kimberley Wong, director of BronxWorks Community Health Programs, which carried out the distribution between 9:00 and 11:00 AM.  “People came from Queens and Manhattan as well as the Bronx to pick up trees for their homes, schools, and community gardens.  We distributed nearly all the trees by 11 and had eight left over which we continued to hand out.  We provided information on how to plant the threes and NYRP staff was there to answer more questions about the trees.”

High school students served by the BronxWorks Center for Achieving Future Education (CAFÉ) college readiness program handed out the trees and “added to the fun of the event,” Kimberley added.  Also on hand were BronxWorks staff members who provided information on selected programs.
