On June 20, 2012 (the first day of summer), Mayor Bloomberg held a press conference at the BronxWorks Morris Innovative Senior Center to speak about the first heat warning of the season. Morris is one of the city’s many cooling centers available to the public during times of dangerous heat.

Mayor Bloomberg asked New Yorkers to take sensible precautions and to help check on their neighbors and the elderly.  He also reminded people about the importance of keeping hydrated, which he demonstrated by taking a sip and filling up his water bottle at a temporary drinking station set up outside the Morris Innovative Senior Center.

BronxWorks’ four senior centers are regularly used as cooling centers.  The city determines which senior centers are open during a heat emergency and what hours they are open.  To find the location of the cooling center nearest you, please call 311 or visit www.nyc.gov.
