Last month P.S. 42 at 1537 Washington Ave. was designated a community school with BronxWorks selected as an overseer at the school, now the P.S. 42 Claremont School.  Specifically, BronxWorks will carry out a program to improve school attendance and cut down on the drop-out rate.  Although we haven’t been there very long, everything is working out smoothly, says Stephanie Rodriguez, BronxWorks’ community school coordinator who is now stationed there.
“The interaction with the staff has been very positive for me,” says Stephanie, who added she is working with a social worker, Carlton Jean, assigned to the school.  “I have been giving out incentives for the days that we have only 20 students or fewer, which is pretty good.”  Carlton and her work with students who have absentee records at recess.
“We have received some referrals and are following up by scheduling meetings with parents,” she said.  “The principal, Lucia Ordus-Castillo, is very receptive to our ideas and gives us plenty of input, which is great.”
