2012 is not over yet but if you supported BronxWorks in 2011 or early 2012, here are just a few highlights of how you have helped our neighbors in the Bronx:

  • The first farmers market created and managed by seniors opened in the Morris Heights neighborhood in July (see BronxWorks Story #13).  Fresh and healthy vegetables and fruits  were available at affordable prices.  Cooking demonstrations took place twice a month, using herbs and fresh selections from the farmers’ stands and a local community garden.
  • The Bronx continues to see a reduction in the number of street homeless people due to the services for this vulnerable population that include outreach 24/7, 365 days a year, a 24-hour drop-in center and safe haven assistance for temporary housing.
  • The Morris Senior Center was designated an Innovative Senior Center – one of the original eight in the city (there are now eleven).  It has expanded its slate of activities and services for active older adults, including a computer lab, yoga and other fitness classes, nutrition information, and geriatric mental health care.
  • Our Aquatics program at the main Community Center on the Grand Concourse organized our first youth swim team, now known as the BronxWorks Blue Waves.  Youngsters have practiced many hours and competed in local swim meets, learning about good sportsmanship, and the benefits of exercise and a healthy lifestyle.
  • CAFÉ, the Center for Achieving Future Education, provided assistance to more than 400 young people, guiding them through the sometimes difficult high school years, and preparing them for the college visit, selection, and application process.  Our college prep program, History Makers, continued this past summer, giving youth a taste of a liberal arts education in a four-year college or university setting.  These determined young adults spent 5 of their precious summer weeks on campus, participating in intensive study, attending classes, and working in teams on a special project.
  • Our Jobs Plus program continued in 2012, successfully helping public housing residents with the development of individual career plans, completion of job readiness training, and assistance with financial tools, such as personal savings accounts and 529 savings for their children.
  • Your support enabled children and youth from our family shelters take their first trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a personally guided educational tour, followed by an art project specially designed for their visit.

We are still tallying-up this year’s activities and will have a complete report on the 2012 accomplishments for you early in 2013.  If you are a donor, we’ll be providing this report to you so you know how important support is to those we help.  If you’d like to receive this report in the future, please consider making a gift to BronxWorks today.  EVERY gift counts and makes a difference!

THANK YOU!
