The BronxWorks Seniors Homelessness Prevention Project (SHPP) helps low-income Bronx residents aged 60 years or older avoid eviction. The program is the only one of its kind in New York City.
SHPP housing specialists work with seniors who have active cases against them in Bronx Housing Court. The program is based inside the Housing Court building.
SHPP helps seniors avoid eviction in both the short-term and long-term. We assist seniors in navigating Housing Court, securing funds to pay back rent, identifying eligibility for benefits, and accessing budget counseling, in order to address multiple barriers to continued independent living.
The first priority of SHPP is to help seniors maintain their current apartment and avoid eviction. In cases where seniors are unsafe, in an untenable housing situation, or the rent is too high to insure long-term sustainability, SHPP will find suitable alternative housing arrangements.
