Four years ago, Eric Hill decided he wanted to give back in his local community after devoting time to international projects. Raised in the Bronx as a young child, he knew that he wanted to direct his enthusiasm for helping others to his native borough.
In addition to his own Bronx roots, Eric’s grandmother single-handedly raised Eric’s mother and her two sisters in the Bronx during the Great Depression, so it was a natural pairing of family connections to the borough and his desire to “honor that heritage as well as help current residents.” Judy Leonard, Eric’s mother-in-law, is a longtime BronxWorks board member so she was thrilled to help him make the connection to BronxWorks.
How exactly does Eric help? By running mile after mile and playing song after song, that’s how. As a four-time member of the BronxWorks NYC Marathon team, and the leader of the Eric Hill Band which plays benefit concerts for BronxWorks, Eric channels his own interests and passion into meaningful support for our Bronx neighbors.
Over the past four years, Eric has raised $20,000 for BronxWorks through his marathons. His fundraising success can be attributed in great part to his efforts to connect this organization to the generous community at the St. Bernard’s School on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, where he is a teacher and running coach. (Eric’s fundraising this year will support BronxWorks programs for children and youth, despite the marathon’s cancellation.)
“I run to set an example for my own kids, and for the boys in the St. Bernard's Running Program. I want to show them that we can do good things for others while doing good things for ourselves too. I believe it is our personal responsibility to be healthy and fit and to actualize our creativity and the other gifts we have been given,” Eric reflects.
Eric notes that the concerts fit in with these ideals as well. He loves music and playing with his band, and feels fortunate to be able to share this for BronxWorks’ benefit. The photo above is from our recent BronxWorks Donor and Volunteer Appreciation Party, at which the Eric Hill Band provided lively musical entertainment.
Creatively connecting his personal interests with the passion to help his fellow community members and honor his family’s history in the Bronx, Eric is an inspirational member of the BronxWorks family. Thanks to volunteers like him and other donors, partners, and supporters who are so generous with their time, talents, and resources, BronxWorks will continue lifting lives and building futures for many miles to come.
BronxWorks has a fantastic family of volunteers who support our work in creative ways – by running marathons, riding in NYC’s annual TD Five Boro Bike Tour, and dedicating other special personal events to BronxWorks, such as making a gift to BronxWorks in lieu of birthday, holiday, or graduation presents. These occasions provide essential financial resources for a variety of programs. We are pleased to partner with our friends who would like to link their personal experiences to the BronxWorks mission and build additional support on our behalf!
