With almost 30 offices and facilities filled with staff helping our Bronx neighbors, it is not surprising that BronxWorks has several landlords we count as valuable partners in our work. Three of them are featured here because they are truly “building futures” in our neighborhoods and helping BronxWorks continue to lift lives.
There can’t be too many landlords who have turkeys delivered to all of their tenants each Thanksgiving but the Bronx can point to one of its own, Peter Magistro, for doing just that. A native of the borough, he founded Bronx Pro Real Estate Management, a family-run, neighborhood-based company in Morris Heights that builds, renovates, and manages low and moderate-income housing in the Bronx. A long-time partner with BronxWorks (and a former annual event honoree), Magistro is currently investing his company’s resources in a brand new early childhood learning center for BronxWorks in one of Bronx Pro’s newest affordable housing projects, serving 55 children and their families.
According to Peter, “Bronx Pro’s mission is to build communities and an effective way to do that is to work with not-for-profit partners like BronxWorks to provide resources and new opportunities to our residents and the broader community. We have always recognized affordable day care as an essential service needed by lower income families and we are proud to support Bronx Works to provide that service in our properties.”
L+M Development Partners and BronxWorks have partnered to provide working families with an afterschool program in one of their Bronx apartment buildings. Debbie Kenyon, L+M’s Chief Operating Officer (left; pictured with Chairman & CEO, Ron Moelis), points out that “our mission to improve the neighborhoods in which we work is equally as important as our work to develop, build, and manage quality affordable, mixed-income and market rate housing. This is a great example of how we work with experienced, established nonprofits to reach this goal and is crucial for community development.” Debbie and Ron are involved with our June 10th annual gala, Debbie as an honoree and Ron as our benefit committee chair, which will help raise more funds to serve our low-income neighbors.
One of our many busy BronxWorks locations with a walk-in office and the Emergency Needs for the Homeless Program, an eviction prevention initiative for families with children, is managed by Lemle & Wolff, Inc., an owner, manager and developer of affordable housing in many Bronx neighborhoods. In spite of recent budget cuts, these programs will remain at this location due to a generous agreement with the firm because as Michael Sturmer (left; pictured with partners Christopher Anelante and Angela Colon) one of the firm’s three partners says, “We care about the communities in which we operate. Our clients, Bronx residents, benefit from the many services that BronxWorks offers which in turn makes for a better living environment.”
All of these partners share something in common beyond a valued collaboration with BronxWorks: a strong and demonstrated commitment to the Bronx and to the people who are not just tenants but who are also our neighbors.
